One the problems with These Kids Today and their “bigotry in the GLBT community”

closetospring:

freibiergesicht:

galesofnovember:

is that kids today have have taken to creating new hair-splitting terms of oppression that only exist so that they can they can position GLBT people (and not straight people) as oppressors.

Examples:

  • “biphobia” narratives where gay or lesbian people not dating you is the same as Fred Phelps (note: actual quote from douchebag “bi activist”)
  • “binarism” narratives in which trans women and trans men are oppressive enforcers of the binary gender system
  • “pansexual” as opposed to oppressive, binarist “bisexual”
  • “homonormativity” where anyone who doesn’t live in your stupid ~queer~ neighborhood on the coasts.

And, in reality, these are labels only thrown at gay, bisexual or trans women.  Sure, the ideas of homonormative and assimilationist have been traditionally about the upper middle class gay men who had so much sway in gay rights orgs, but on the internet and in most ~radical~ spaces they tend to be thrown more enthusiastically at boring old lesbians.

Because sexism and internalized homophobia, not “acephobia” or “bigotry against kinky polysexual dudes” are genuine, lingering problems in queer spaces. Go fucking figure

yeah i mean ok i have experienced legit disgust/disbelief towards bi ppl (ok let’s be honest towards bi MEN because the issue of bi-whatever is heavily gendered but bi women won’t admit it) on spaces online and irl that are primarily populated by gay men and that is stupid and sucky and a real problem but you know ppl like erika moen have made me never want to use the word biphobia again b/c it’s never a nuanced discussion of all the complicated issues surrounding bi-ness as it relates to a larger “queer” community and passing and privilege and identity but instead it’s a bunch of my fellow married-to-men ladies shrieking that gay people are just as mean to them as straight people.  because a group not accepting you is the ultimate tragedy in life, just like high school and the popular girls.  ugh go write a shitty comic in portland, no one else cares.

i mean seriously when you reduce the main ‘biphobic’ arguments they are just inherently homophobic, even if gay people are saying them like sorry for their internalized bullshit but that’s what it boils down to.  there’s a lot of aspects of mainstream gay dude culture that sucks sure enough but it’s a relatively minor issue wrt to how society at large defines you if you fuck/love someone of the same gender.

and the bi vs pan thing i won’t even get into it i will kill someone

homonormativity is like, a concept that sounds kinda relevant for a second until you realize the people shouting against it are even more privileged and stupid and shortsighted as the people they are accusing of it in the first place.  we’re talking about children who literally can’t understand that marriage rights or the repeal of DADT might…slightly intersect with race, class, and immigration status.  not even for a second.

i was thinking about the last paragraph when i read this post. because like, in my experience, people who qualify as ~homonormative~ are often, say, living in rural areas. and someone is not a BAD QUEER because they value that — whether it’s deeply held or also partly as a way to get by in rural/poor places — more than moving to the big city and becoming a radical pomo queer. (which is so funny/sad because wasn’t that one of the critiques of it gets better? guess we’ve moved on from caring about rural/poor people.) and yeah obviously that’s not even going into the privilege of being able to go THIS LEGAL RIGHT DOESN’T MATTER, SMASH THE SYSTEM oh what do we do about all the people who need those rights until we can smash the system? STOP TALKING ABOUT IT HOMONORMATIVE JERK

Fuck straight cis people

paraphrased:

Fuck straight cis people who think queer pride is for them because they’re ‘abnormal’.

Fuck straight cis people who think queer groups exist to make them feel warm and fuzzy inside and kiss their pseudo-ally asses.

Fuck straight cis people who think we exist to fulfill their sexual fantasies.

Fuck straight cis people who think they can tell us about how the queer community feels or should feel.

Fuck straight cis people who think they can take queer words, queer culture, queer resources, and the queer community from us. You’ve got the whole rest of the fucking world.

This is homophobia just as much as bible-thumping.

fuckin’ yes. I believe in your rights, dont get me wrong, but seriously parading it everywhere gets annoying after a while. Im surprised im still on tumblr with how many times i see this stuff on my dash :|

Honestly, this. This is why things like pridefests and pride parades just, well, annoy me. There is awareness, and then there is ‘so much it’s just really stupid and irritating’, and ‘pride’ has gone way past the dividing line into the bad side.

What they meant: Blah blah blah I’m sick of LGBTQ people actually being proud of who they are instead of hiding it from me!

Okay seriously. Pride exists because queer people are told every fucking day that we are shameful, our existence is shameful, our love is shameful, our community is shameful, every fucking thing we do is shameful, and we need a time to come together and say “No, fuck you, we have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
Pride isn’t just about letting straight people know we exist, it’s about showing them that we’re sick of hiding, sick of hating ourselves, and sick of trying to change just so they’ll like us.
When I can go a week without thinking about how much fucking easier my life would be if I could just be straight, without being reminded that there are millions of people out there who think I deserve to die, who will kill me just for who I’m attracted to, when I can go a week without hearing someone complain about how being mistaken for being a lesbian is the worst thing that could happen to them, when kids stop feeling like they’d be better off dead than queer, then maybe, maybe you could say that pride doesn’t have a purpose.
Except even then it will need to exist to celebrate the things we’ve overcome to get there in the first place.
So fuck you.

i’m fine with you being gay as long as i don’t have to know you’re gay
shut up str8ie

Heeeey, OP and everyone going “this this this this this~”? You’re completely fucking terrible, congratulations.

I need feminism because when I say that girls should be able to join boy scouts and boys should be able to join girl scouts, it shouldn’t be met with eye rolls.

Uhhh … feminism does not necessitate breaking down all gender-segregated spaces. I myself was only a temporary and reluctant participant in Girl Scouts but I know it was an extremely valuable experience for a lot of girls/women in large part BECAUSE it was only girls, and has a lot more progressive practices than the Boy Scouts (for instance, the story about right-wingers freaking out about a Girl Scout troop accepting a trans girl.)

JOANNA WEISS
Still waiting for a heroine of confidence
- Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of “The Hunger Games,” is yet another young woman who shoulders burdens and fulfills other people’s desires, instead of bending the world to her will.

I don’t know that many dirt-poor 16-year-olds in dystopian postapocalyptic settings are really in a position to “bend the world to their will”

Wow, there’s so much wrong in that article. I’m not even a big Katniss fan and that pissed me off.
Fucking really, lumping her in the same category as Bella and Ana, the protagonist from Twilight fanfiction? JFC…

ok
YOU HAVE UNLEASHED THE KRAKEN AT THIS POINT
I hate, hate, HATE, this new trend of declaring every female character with even a shred of submissiveness as a “mary sue” or a “Bella.”
I’m sorry? I wasn’t aware that a teenager living in the poorest part of the world is supposed to have the gumption to change her world right off the bat. Remember that time that you were dirt poor and had to put yourself in a life or death battle to save your family? Remember that time you almost starved to death because your mother was catatonic with grief?
Ok, I get it. Female created media aimed at Females sometimes has problematic elements. Twilight sends a dangerous message. Katniss isn’t perfect, but that is what we NEED in characters.
But what I want/need to see is the same vitriol and criticism aimed at male created media aimed at males.
Because I bet you anything, Johanna Weiss/John Green/every body else DOESN’T SPEND HALF AS MUCH TIME DOING THAT.

"It would mean I’d leave a country and go back to a country that I don’t remember, a country that I don’t feel at home, and I don’t even graduate high school. Everything I’ve worked for, it’s, like, going down the drain in a matter of days." —

Valedictorian at high school, faces deportation order. [HuffPost]

Daniela Pelaez is valedictorian of her class at North Miami Senior High, in the international baccalaureate program with a 6.7 GPA, applying to Ivy League universities, and hopes to become a heart surgeon.

“Over my dead body will this child be deported,” said Miami-Dade Superintendant of Schools Alberto Carvalho, who exited North Miami High Friday morning holding the 18-year-old’s hand.

The pair joined a walkout protest planned by fellow students after a judge denied Pelaez’ request for a green card Monday and issued a deportation order.

According to the Huffington Post,

  • Daniela came to the United States of America at the age of 4.
  • Her family left Colombia in the late 90’s.
  • Her mother is currently in Colombia (left in ‘06) for medical reasons.
  • Daniela lives with her father, a legal U.S. resident.
  • Daniela also lives with her brother, a member of the U.S. military, who is also a citizen.
  • Daniela has a 6.7 GPA in the IB program.
  • Daniela wants to become a heart surgeon.
  • Daniela was denied a green card.
  • AT THE AGE OF 4, 6.7 GPA, DEPORTED TO A NATION SHE DOESN’T REMEMBER.
  • Did you understand all of this?

What does the United States of America stand to gain from this deportation? What does our nation stand to gain? A future scientist? Role model? Successful individual?

“I’ve been asked the question before: ‘Do I feel American?’ or ‘Do I believe I am?’” she told NBCMiami. “And I don’t think it’s a question. I’m American. I know the national anthem. I know the laws. I know what it is to be an American.”

Daniela is one of the millions of faces and stories that highlight the absurdness of our nation’s immigration laws. She should be applauded and exalted for her achievements, as an undocumented student or not. If this story touches you, I recommend that sign the petition to, at the very minimum, show your support.

"And do not think you shouldn’t be standing on that chair, shouting ‘I AM A FEMINIST’ if you are a boy. A male feminist is one of the most glorious end-products of evolution. A male feminist should ABSOLUTELY be on the chair - so we ladies may all toast you, in champagne, before coveting your body wildly." —

Caitlin Moran (via alysinw0nderland)

no, what will happen is I will kick him in the bits because I’ve yet to meet one ‘male feminist’ who wasn’t a manipulative misogynist wanker. this quote rly upsets me, because it’s bullshit; leaving aside whether men can call themselves feminists (they could if they weren’t almost all so mansplainy about it), I’m not licking someone’s arse just because they say I’m a human being. That is a very, very basic right.

I think this post about the variety of sex workers in ancient rome is the silliest thing ever posted on feministe

or at least the gooberiest example of how pathetic feministe’s version of feminist cultural critique is to appear in recent months.

If nothing else,  someone presents us with a context-less list of words and tells us the moral of this story is how fun and sex positive ancient Rome.

I mean, I think the easiest, jumps-right-out-at-you thing to take away from that list is that there really wasn’t a single profession available to women where you weren’t also expected to sell sexual favors.   But I guess that’s not titillating to think about.
